Review: Tell Me On A Sunday

Judie Prenger makes the most of this melancholy solo woman musical at Royal Concert Hall. Whilst being thwarted and rejected in love; this lonely English woman repeatedly expects a different result and tries to remain optimistic.

Andrew Lloyd -Weber collaborated with the lyricist Don Black. The show includes the song ‘take that Look of your Face’ and the title track, ‘Tell me on a Sunday’ which two days after seeing the show remain fixed in my mind. I can’t say I enjoyed the show but it was memorable, the theme of lonely desperate woman, who keeps seeking love and approval from a man, doesn’t sit well with me personally, it was written by two men from a woman’s point of view, for me this shows, but to the many thousands of people who relish this production I am in the minority.

She writes poignant humorous letters home to her mother keeping her updated on her fortunes whilst she tries to get her green card and find lasting love in America. The simple set and costume changes work well and are tight and effective. The musicians just behind the set are a talented bunch, the whole production is professional and almost understated; it’s just enough to do the job.

Jodie Prenger is a polished charismatic performer and both her vocals and her acting were of top quality and I thoroughly enjoyed her in ‘Calamity Jane’ last year. I will definitely be back to see her again when she visits Nottingham.
