Nottingham Comedy Festival 2013: Day One Preview – 20 September 2013

The Nottingham Comedy Festival, now in its fifth year, kicks off today, starting eight days of fantastic comedy across the city, from some of the world’s best known comedians right through to some great up and coming talent.

We’ve already given you an overview of what you can expect – here – but we’re also going to bring you a day-by-day look at the the goings on during the week.

So here is what you can expect on day one.

Best in Live Stand up Comedy – Glee Club

Friday night at Glee and it’s the Best in Live Stand up Comedy in which the venue present some of the best in live stand up comedy from the UK and beyond.

Tonight’s bill features Irish comedian Ian Coppinger, well known for his improv skills as well as co-star and writer of RTE comedy series Crouched, Ian is one of the top comedians in Ireland.

2009 Scottish Comedian of the Year, JOHN GAVIN will bring his tales of home life, as a married father of three, offering up tails that many in the audience will surely be able to relate to.

Dan Nightingale is one of the hidden gems of the UK comedy circuit, known for his spot on observational skills and energetic characterisations, Dan is one of the most exciting comedians out there and always leaves a crowd in stitches.

Award winning Mancunian comedian Tony Burgess rounds up the bill.

Tickets for the show are just £11 (£5 NUS) or take advantage of the Comedy & Soul Food Special, where you can enjoy a great meal while taking in the show.

Funmbi Omotayo

Funmbi Omotayo: The People’s Champion – The Navigation

You may not have heard of Funmbi yet but that is surely set to change, winner of the Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year and Amused Moose Laugh Off awards last year, this extremely likable and extremely funny young comic is surely on the path to big things.

This may be your only chance to see this talented comedian in a venue as intimate as the Navigation, so make your most of it and enjoy a night of fantastic comedy that you’ll be able to look back on fondly when Funmbi is smashing it at Arenas across the UK.

The show starts at 8pm and tickets are £5.

New comedy showcase Below the Belt Comedy will take place at 9.30pm, featuring three fantastic acts and the resident DJ, all for just £2.

Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler – Royal Concert Hall

We’re pretty sure Bill Bailey will need little introduction to anybody reading this, a veteran of the comedy circuit, not to mention a regular on the likes of Have I Got News For You, QI and Never Mind the Buzzcocks (where he did 100 shows as a team captain) – not to mention a keen bird watcher.

Bill will be at the Royal Concert Hall for his latest show Qualmpeddler with his look at the modern world from the search for the Higgs Boson to a re-appraisal of some of the world’s finest works of art – all interspersed with his great musical comedy, which may even include a dub version of Downton Abbey.

This will surely be yet more greatness from a true master of the craft.

Friday Night Comedy – Jongleurs

For those wanting to check out some great comedy from top circuit comedians you can do just that by heading to Jongleurs.

Performances tonight will be from Mandy Knight, Daniel McLoughlin, Paul Pirie and Geoff Boyz, plus a great selection of drinks and bar meals – plus you can head into the club rooms of Oceana (the clubs venue) for a party afterwards – or relax in the quieter bar are.
