News: Time for Notts shoppers to chose a new Emett Clock charity

EMETT CLOCK (1)

Each year, thousands of pounds are raised as generous shoppers throw coins into the pool of Nottingham’s iconic Emett Clock – and this year intu Victoria Centre is asking its customers to decide which local good cause should benefit.

Staff at the centre have put forward four local charities including a local children’s cancer charity, those helping families to deal with childhood illness and a young carers organisation, which will now be subject to a public vote on the centre’s Facebook page.

The good cause that receives the most votes will be announced as part of the inaugural Emett Week that will be hosted at the centre between 11-17 June in celebration of the clock’s return to intu Victoria Centre following its extensive refurbishment last year.

Nigel Wheatley, general manager at intu Victoria Centre, said: “The Emett Clock is hugely important not only to us here at the centre, but also to the people of Nottingham and we were very keen to ensure that it has a lasting legacy in the city.

“Each year we will be hosting a week of celebration in June, which marks its return to the centre following its refurbishment, and as part of that we will be choosing a charity to benefit from all the money our customers so generously throw into its pond each year.

“We know that the people of Nottingham love the clock and we wanted to give them the opportunity to help us decide which charity should benefit from the incredibly generous donations collected in its pool each year – so we decided to put it to a public vote ahead of our very first Emett Week.”

The nominated charities are: Maggie’s Nottingham – a centre which provides a purpose-built environment for those affected by cancer; Parents Association for Seriously Ill Children (PASIC), which provides support for local families dealing with childhood cancer; Newlife, which works with families who have children with a disability or terminal illness; and Action for Young Carers, which provides support and respite for young carers in the city who may not otherwise get a break.

The successful charity will receive all of the donations thrown into the Emett Clock’s pool for the coming 12 months.

“Our shoppers are incredibly generous here at intu Victoria Centre and the amount of money collected by the Emett Clock can reach thousands of pounds over the course of a year, which is of huge benefit to a charity,” added Nigel.
