Theatre Review: The Bodyguard

Last night Theatre Royal treated us to the latest production of The Bodyguard. From the stalls to the top balcony people made their way to their seats through the excited buzz of the audience, having been sternly warned “no singing along”! It went, quite literally, off with a bang, and from that moment to the very last, the extremely talented cast captivated every last one of us.

We were treated to a magic Mike-esque raunchy opening number with accompanying pyrotechnics, although I did feel slightly worried for those in the front row! As well as the clever use of lighting and set changes the story unfolded for us via projected visuals.

The stunning Melody Thornton brought her unique talent to the role of Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston’s character in the original film), performing all the classic songs exquisitely. Thornton wasn’t the only one wowing with her phenomenal vocals, Emily-Mae, who played Nicki Marron was simply incredible. The whole cast portrayed their characters amazingly, from the super creepy Stalker by Marios Nicolaide to the infuriating PR guy Sy Spector by James Groom.

Alongside the very deserved recognition for the cast, the live orchestra (Chris Egan) costume department (Tim Harley) and choreography team (Karen Bruce) all deserve a special mention as their work was flawless.

A night full of shocks, laughs and music, this truly is a fantastic celebration of the one we will always love, Whitney.

Showing at Theatre Royal until Saturday 8th July. Get your tickets here.
