Theatre Review: Cinderella

You know when it’s panto season when there’s an almost unbearable level of noisy excitement before the show even starts. Entering the Nottingham Playhouse we were treated to christmas songs before the main event. As expected there was a lot of younger people in the audience including some girl guides lucky enough to sit on front row.

There was a lovely stage glittering with Christmas sparkly spirit. My young companion observed, “look how many sparkles they wasted…but it’s definitely worth it”

We were given some very simple instructions for the evening, “Cheer, Boo and turn off ya phone!” And then the party started, in unique circus set.

All the expected audience participation and traditional bad jokes (You know what children a bad name? Gwyneth Paltrow)

The live band did an amazing job supporting the cast to entertain the audience with modern pop songs entwined into the traditional story of Cinderella.

I’ve been to plenty of pantos, at the various theatres around Nottingham over the years, and despite the cheap dig at the theatre royal panto within the show, I have to admit this is one of the best! The magic of theatre and Christmas really has came to playhouse this year!

Cinderella is at Nottingham Playhouse until 13 January 2024, get your tickets here.
