News: All guns blazing for Nottinghamshire County Show headliners

Porthsmouth Field Gun Display Team

Visitors to the 2016 Nottinghamshire County Show will witness the highest levels of commitment, teamwork and discipline when the Portsmouth Action Field Gun display takes to the main ring as the show’s headliners.

Performing on both days of the show, this well-renowned team – comprising of two adult teams competing against each other to overcome an obstacle course – promises to be a star attraction.

Peter Scott, first trainer of the Portsmouth Action Field Gun team, said that the team is thrilled to be performing at the Nottinghamshire County Show. He said: “As a team we have been performing at county shows for more than eight years but this is the first time we have been to the Nottinghamshire County Show.

“Field Gun is a unique, exciting sport which pushes competitors to the very limit and is reputed to be one of the toughest team events in the world. It requires a huge amount of teamwork and discipline.

“It involves two field gun crews competing to be the first to haul a field gun and limber – a two wheeled carriage to which a gun may be attached – over walls and ramps and across a chasm.

“County shows are a great way for us to spread the word about the sport. It’s a chance for people to see what we do and ask us questions about getting involved.”

Inspired by the exploits of the Navy during the Boer War in 1899, the display in its present form began in 1907, with the last Royal Navy Field Gun run held at Earls Court in 1999.

In 2001 the field gun run was resurrected by a crew and staff comprising ex-field gunners and civilians.  They wanted to prove that a civilian field gun crew could perform competitive field gun runs using the same drill and equipment over the same course as Royal Naval gunners did for 100 years.

Adrian Johnston, chief executive of Newark Showground, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome the Portsmouth Action Field Gun team to this year’s county show.

“We’re always looking to add something new to the Nottinghamshire County Show experience and 2016 is looking to be our biggest show to date – we are also expecting the BBMF Spitfire flypast on both days during this year’s show so crowds can look to the skies for a special glimpse.”

The Nottinghamshire County Show’s field gun display will be staged at 1pm and 3.15pm on Saturday and again at 12 noon and 1.30pm on Sunday.
