Brand New Comedy Festival Brings The Funny And Celebrates Nottingham

A Sondheim-style musical, made up on the spot, is just one of the incredible shows heading to Nottingham this week as part of a brand new festival.

The first ever Robin Hood International Improv Festival starts on Thursday in Nottingham. It runs from 8th – 11th September at NonSuch Studios bringing over 100 performers from across the world into the city.

With over 20 shows to see, Nottingham is going to be treated to world-class, hilarious improvised shows. It’s so funny, you won’t believe it’s made up.

One highlight is Saturday night’s headline show “Humbug” featuring two improvisers from the legendary Chicago improv scene; Andel Sudik and Matt Higbee. Andel has performed at the legendary Second City theater where the likes of Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Steven Colbert got their start.

On Sunday night, the headline show is “Here: The Improvised Sondheim Musical”. This is a new show created by award-winning improv team The Maydays especially for the festival. The Maydays have headlined improv festivals across Europe, attracting critical praise and constant standing ovations.

The original festival was due to run in May 2020. When the Covid pandemic put paid to that, the two Artistic Directors of the festival kept in touch with all the performers slated to perform in the hope the festival could still go ahead one day.

“This festival has been a wild ride and it’s not even started yet. We originally came up with the idea for the festival in July 2019 while sitting in a bar in Chicago. To think it’s finally happening is mind-blowing, not least because we have so many people heading to our amazing city to create four days of funny” said Co-Artistic Director, Liam Webber.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be putting on over 20 shows in just four days. Some shows are from companies visiting the city but we also have lots of local improv companies playing. We’re bringing the best of the world’s improv to Nottingham but also showing off the best of Nottingham’s improv to the world.” Said Co-Artistic Director, Lloydie James Lloyd.

The Robin Hood International Improv Festival runs from Thursday 8th September to Sunday 11th September at Nonsuch Studios in Lower Parliament Street in Nottingham.
