Theatre Review: The Scarlett Pimpernel

FIGHT-THE-SCARLET-PIMPERNEL-769x1024

Written by Baroness Barbara Orczy a Hungarian, as book, but didn’t find success until it was adapted into a play first performed in Nottingham in 1903. As a romantic drama, it was viewed by the critics as old fashioned but the audiences loved it. The Baroness set her character, a heroic figure ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’ in the 1790’s with the French Revolution in full flow. Her book was published after the play, it was a huge success and the play itself ran in the west end for 2000 performances.

This outing of The Scarlet Pimpernel has been adapted admirably by Louise Page, the cast of 6, all did a splendid job but the star was of course, The Scarlet Pimpernel himself Andrew Ryan, we enjoyed his performance very much, as the gentleman about town in London and the disguised hero in France, saving genteel folk from Madame guillotine.
This is a production is from the talented people at TABS, Chesterfield.

If you go to see this play don’t expect a thriller but rather a light comedy then you will definitely enjoy it.
We seek him here, we seek him there ….. you will find him at the theatre royal Nottingham
until Saturday 19th August .
