Having been a big fan of the novel by Paula Hawkins and slightly disappointed with the film I wasn’t sure what to expect with the stage production.
I am also a big (Instagram) fan of Giovanna Fletcher; although I have never had the privilege of seeing her grace the stage until tonight and she did not disappoint. Her stage presence was magnificent, getting the essence of the drunk Rach Watson in a very compelling and endearing way. However some of the other members of the small ensemble were equally good if not better (special mention for Paul McEwan portraying Detective Gaskill).
Whenever a book has been brought to life by someone else, you never will get the same imagery and emotions as you pictured and felt on that first read however despite it not matching up to how I had envisioned it, in some ways this was better.
It was a very modern production, with minimal set and the transition of scenes was cleverly done via the use of lights, digital transparent screens and sounds, (at some points blindingly bright and deafeningly loud).
It was also humorous with a few titters initially spreading throughout the audience until they realised it was safe to laugh! There was definitely the right balance between the light and dark moments. Slight word of warning if you have not read the book, there are some potentially triggering scenes, especially for those that may have suffered DV or pregnancy loss.
This show is provocative, riveting, intriguing and moving. Or in the numerously repeated words of the ladies sat behind us “So good”!
Showing at Theatre Royal until 25th Jan. Book here https://trch.co.uk/whats-on/the-girl-on-the-train/
