Theatre Review: Dreamgirls

For anyone that has seen Dreamgirls the film, this show is probably a must see. However, I had to admit I had never seen it, although I was familiar with some of the songs made even more famous by Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé.

It was clear there were a LOT of mega fans in the packed Theatre Royal on Wednesday. Every song got a massive applause with some people even choosing to give a standing ovation mid show without even mentioning the reaction at the end!

Whilst the 2006 film did bring this musical to the mainstream it has actually been 35 years since it opened on Broadway. It had its London premiere in 2016 and this year is its first UK tour, so by attending you can be part of Dreamgirls history.

Effie, Jennifer Hudson’s character in the film, is being performed by the amazingly talented Nicole Raquel Dennis. You may recognise Dennis from tv’s The Voice, where was a finalist in 2019. Her rendition of “And I am telling you I’m not going” left the audience with goosebumps.

This is a must see for anyone who loves masses of soul, glitz and glam in their musicals. Showing at Nottingham Theatre Royal until Saturday 28th May 2022. Get your tickets here.
