Friday January 10
We’re into the roaring 20s now so there’s all the more reason to get your jazz on!  Guitarist/trumpeter Thom Whitworth whips out his Funky Organ courtesy of Paul Deats (organ/keys), he is also joined by Simon Paterson on bass guitar and Stevie Smith on drums at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley.  Doors open at 7pm and entry is from £8.
Saturday January 11
Deli Quartet play spacious, mellow sounds which evolve into an all-out funky groove led by Sophie Fishwick on the drum kit, Deb Mawby on alto and soprano saxes, Paul Deats on Rhodes/piano and Steve Truman on double bass; catch them at Peggy’s from 7pm, entry is from £8.  Between 12-4pm at the same venue Paul also plays while afternoon tea is served (£12 for one or £22 for 2).
Sunday January 12
Bassist Martyn Spencer’s trio featuring Matt Ratcliffe on keys and Andrew Wood on drums are joined by trumpeter Hugh Pascall from 1.30-3.30pm at The Lion at Basford, they then hot foot it to host the Malt Cross Jazz Jam at from 5.30pm. The Mezinee concert at Peggy’s is by Me and Mr Jones featuring vocalist Rachel Foster between 1-3pm, entry is from £3.
Monday January 13
The Alfa Big Swing Band return to the Village Inn, Marehay with their big band music, show starts at 8.30pm.
Tuesday January 14
Dexter’s Jazz Club at the Headstocks in Cinderhill welcome saxophonist Ben Martin’s Quartet featuring Paul Deats on piano, Simon Paterson on bass and Andrew ‘Woody’ Wood on drums who play the music of Sonny Rollins including the whole of Sonny’s 1956 album Saxophone Colossus. Entry is £6.
Wednesday January 15
The Midlands World Music Consortium host an Eastern European Feast at Peggy’s for the Orthodox New Year which falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar, tickets are from £5.
Thursday January 16
Jazz Steps return to the Bonington Theatre in Arnold with Wako quartet who come from the vanguard of the New Wave of Nordic Jazz and feature Martin Myhre Olsen on saxophones, Kjetil André Mulelid on the grand piano, Bár∂ur Reinert Polusen on bass and Simon Olderskog Albertsen on drums.  Their music starts at 8pm and tickets are £12/5 NUS. Matt Ratcliffe’s Trio also bring their Beatles Songbook back to Peggy’s, music starts at 8pm and entry is from £4.
Where no entry fee is mentioned assume your purchases from the venue support the musicians.
