Review: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas – Theatre Royal

This is the story of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp in Poland, he has moved with his family from Berlin. Bruno thinks he lives in a house called ‘Out With’ this resembles the sound of the word Auschwitz. He is lonely and goes off exploring; Bruno forms a friendship with a Jewish boy Shmuel who is exactly the same age on the other side of the fence.

Cameron Duncan as Bruno and Sam Peterson as Shmuel , both did really well portraying their characters admirably.

The staging of the play is effective with its stripped down feel, the use of the projections on the back wall are well done, as is the revolving set when Bruno looks out of the window towards the camp.

Overhall, ‘The boy in Striped Pyjamas’ is a solid production, although not exactly enjoyable because of the devastating outcome of the boy’s friendship.

On until Saturday 21st at Theatre Royal, Nottingham, then on tour.
