Review: Sing-a-long-a Grease – The Royal Concert Hall Nottingham

You’ve probably seen the film ’Grease’,  but probably never like this before!

I’m too young to have seen it in all it’s glory on the big screen, but not only did I do that last week, I had a fun evening singing along with fellow Grease fans at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall.

Fancy dress is not compulsory but some movie goers really went to town to look the part, with a competition taking place on stage to choose the best. There were Pink Ladies, Euguene and obviously Danny & Sandy’s young and old competing to be the the best.

It was all part of Sing-a-long-a Grease, brought to you by the producers of the worldwide phenomenon Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music.

Sing-a-long-a started with the Sound of Music for the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in London in 1999 before opening at the Prince Charles Cinema in August of that year. The main audience for the show was young women, who discovered that attending the show in large groups was a fun, safe and bonding experience.

Initially, there was an eight-show run but by the end of this run the show had sold out. Following it’s success, the company has produced sing-a-long-a versions of a whole variety of favourite films including Rocky Horror Picture Show, which I think would be amazing to attend, Annie, Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Moulin Rouge, as well as live singalonga shows such as Sing-a-long-a Elvis and the highly successful live show Sing-a-long-a Abba.

But tonight was about the classic film Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

The evening begins with our host leading us through the appropriate heckles  and how to use the stuff in our free goody bag, which includes a tissue, a balloon and a flag, during the film.  We also brush up on our hand jive skills.

A movie showing with a difference follows.  You don’t quite sit back and relax to watch Danny and Sandy and the gang, you’re up on your feet, dancing and singing along to Summer Nights, Grease Lightening  and You’re the One That I Want.  The likelihood is that you’ll already know the words to those well-known numbers, but just incase, the lyrics are put on the movie screen karaoke style to help you along.

You can’t help but get involved and join in, whether you’re boo-ing Cha-Cha or sticking a paper bag on your head for ‘Beauty School Dropout’.

You’ll probably never watch the film in the same way again, but this is the way it should be.

You better shape up – you’re going to need your energy for this fabulous, fun-filled evening
