Review: Night Must Fall – Theatre Royal Crime Thriller Season

Night Must Fall is the second performance of Theatre Royal’s 4 week long ‘Thriller Season’ and, boy, did this one ever live up to it’s thriller billing! At times I was positively charged with what can only be described as a genuine foreboding trepidation and apprehension for what may soon come to pass before my eyes. I cannot recall feeling such a feeling since being a young rebellious boy and watching, in secret, and against my parents’ wishes, a ‘scary movie’ from the video cabinet and having to hide behind the safety of my hands. I drew short of actually hiding behind my hands this time although I may not have had had I not been surrounded by an equally captivated audience which, during the tenser scenes, I was scarcely aware were there.

Contrastingly the performance was punctuated with many comic scenes which had the audience laughing out loud, mainly through the wheelchair bound elderly lady character who’s cottage in the English countryside was the setting for the play and through which we were all amused by her rarely pleased and often bemoaning mannerisms. Everything taken into account we were treated to some great acting with loud, clear voices that drew in and treated the viewer to a thrilling and enthralling performance.
