Preview: Hit the Deck Festival – 20 April 2014

This Sunday the streets around Talbot Street in Nottingham will be awash with music lovers as DHP Family’s annual alternative music festival HIT THE DECK comes to town.

The annual festival – which also takes in Bristol the day before – will feature performances from a host of upcoming bands, as well as a few of the already established ones, and they’ll be a number of Nottingham performer on the day as well.

A PLASTIC ROSE may not have originated in this fair city – the band, in fact, hail from Belfast, but they have made Nottingham their home as they continue to make their mark on the UK music scene. The band, whose debut album ‘Camera.Shuttle.Life’ received a KKKK rating in Kerrang! magazine last year and have received national radio airplay over the last few months are certainly a band on the rise and are much loved in their adopted hometown. They’ll be well worth catching on the Rock City Basement stage.

Talking of Nottingham bands on the rise BABY GODZILLA are certainly one such band. Probably the city’s most intense band the BG boys began to grab the attention of the likes of Rocksound, Metal Hammer and Kerrang! last year, who all realised what Nottingham already knew, that Baby Godzilla kick ass. This led to them landing a slot on this years Kerrang! tour, seeing them support nu-metal legends Limp Bizkit. Add to that he news the band will be playing at Download this year and big things are on the horizon for these guys. Make sure to catch them in Stealth on Sunday. Be warned though their sets do tend to get a bit, shall we say, crazy.

Rock City’s main stage is the central point of the day’s action and the place you’ll be able to catch the likes of festival headliners BRAND NEW along with SAVES THE DAY, PULLED APART BY HORSES and HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS – who will be playing their album ‘The Silence in Black and White’ in full, however before all that Nottingham’s very own ADELPHIA will be opening the stage – and no doubt doing so in storming fashion, so if you’re looking to blow away any cobwebs from a late Saturday night make sure to catch these guys live on stage, believe us you will not be disappointed.

Last year LACEY made it to the last leg of the vote to win a spot at Download, narrowly missing out on a spot at the Donington Park festival, however we’ve no doubt they’ll be there before to long, in the meantime they’re still rocking out and will be kicking things off at The Forum on Sunday.

Also playing on the day will be several Nottingham acoustic performers who will appear on the line up for the Acoustic stage in the Rescue Rooms Bar. RYAN THOMAS is winning much praise at the moment for his ‘Worries & Troubles’ EP released in the last couple of weeks and will no doubt be treating you to tracks from the EP when he performs. You can also expect folksy blues and rock stylings from NottinghamLIVE favourite and Future Sound of Nottingham 2013 runner up SAM JONES. 19 year old ADAM ZAREBA is currently working on his second EP, due this year, hard working and passionate Adam will thrill you with his melodic acoustic. Opening things on the acoustic stage will be ALEX HEL with his acoustic folk pop sounds.

Of course it’s not just about the Nottingham music at Hit the Deck with a huge array of performers from across the UK – and beyond – performing at the various venues during the day.

We’ve already mentioned some of the great acts playing the Rock City main stage, meanwhile in the Basement THE BLACKOUT will headline proceedings while you can also catch sets from the likes of WILLIAM BECKETT, GHOULS and Derby band EVA PLAYS DEAD, who we highly recommend.

In Stealth, as well as the Baby Godzilla boys, there will be performances from A WORLD DEFINED, PALM READER, MORE THAN LIFE and more before BRUTALITY WILL PREVAIL wrap things up.

There is some great music in the Rescue Rooms where KVERLERTEK finish the day off, following on from, among others, THE WORLD ALIVE, NECK DEEP and GNARWOLVES.

The Rescue Rooms bar is where you can catch the acoustic acts including the four Nottingham acts we already mentioned, joining them will be KRISTOPHER ROE, THOMAS NICHOLAS & MATT KENNEDY and VERSECHORUSVERSE.

If you head across the road to The Forum you’ll be able to catch sets from PEOPLE ON VACATION, featuring Bowling for Soup’s Jaret Reddick, PATENT PENDING, the soon to be calling it a day KIDS IN GLASS HOUSES and MEMPHIS MAY FIRE.

Meanwhile if you fancy a bit of a stroll you can take a walk down to the Doc Martens store in Exchange Walk – opposite Primark – where THE WORLD ALIVE and NECK DEEP will be performing special acoustic sessions.

As you can see there is plenty going on throughout the day – for more information and the full line up with times and venue details head to the Hit the Deck Festival website
