NottinghamLIFE: Dance the night away for Breast Cancer Research

The Boobie Ball takes place on Saturday 1 October

Tickets are now on sale for the first ever charity ball in aid of world-leading breast cancer research being developed here in Nottinghamshire.

Sarah Blythe, freelance writer and editor, and friend Lisa Johnson, full-time mum of three, breast cancer survivor and face of The University of Nottingham’s #BreastCancerAndMe campaign, have joined forces to organise a charity ball to raise much needed funds for research at The University of Nottingham.

The charity ball – aptly named the ‘Boobie Ball’ – will take place on Saturday 1 October 2016 at Colwick Hall, Nottingham. The event will be hosted by stand-up comedian Alistair Barrie and promises to be a glamorous night to remember.

Tickets cost just £50 and include a drinks reception, three course meal with wine, live music from the Miles Harlem band, a raffle, silent auction, live auction hosted by Charles Hanson – star of BBC’s Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and Flog It!, and professional magician Duncan William will be wowing guests with his close-up magic and mind-reading.

Lisa said: “We are thrilled to be organising the Boobie Ball and can’t wait to welcome our guests on the night. I myself have had breast cancer and have sadly lost my mother and mother-in-law to the disease. To know that world-leading research is happening right here in the East Midlands – by research teams in Nottingham and Derby – is simply incredible. That’s why we’re working to raise as much money as possible for this ground-breaking research.”

Every penny of profit raised at the Boobie Ball will go directly into the research laboratories to help fund a world-first blood test to detect early breast cancer, as well as research into stopping breast cancer spreading to other areas of the body and the development of targeted treatments. The research has the potential to save thousands of lives locally and worldwide.

Sarah said: “Having worked on the #BreastCancerAndMe campaign as in-house producer I was overwhelmed by the devastating impact of breast cancer and the real experiences of the women I met. The potential to make real, life-changing progress in breast cancer research is staggering, and it’s all happening right here on our door-step.

“We’ve had generous support from local business in Nottingham, Newark and Leicester, particularly Ward Recycling who have kindly sponsored us. Others have donated raffle prizes and auction lots; we’ve even had prizes personally donated by celebrities including David Walliams and Russell Howard. It’s great to know so many people are behind our fundraising effort.

“Tickets need to be booked by 28 August so now’s the time to get friends, family and colleagues together and join us to help to beat breast cancer. We’d love to see as many people there as possible on 1 October – everyone is welcome.”
