NottinghamLIFE: Ahead of World Tourism Day – Laura Snow, sales and marketing manager at St James Hotel tells NottinghamLIVE why she loves Notts.

With World Tourism Day fast approaching, it has never been more appropriate to stand back and reflect on what Nottingham has to offer as a city. The day itself, due to be held this year on 27th September, seeks to make tourism accessible to all, and Nottingham certainly has something for everyone. So if you know someone who is coming to visit, make sure to tell them all the great things they can do while they’re here – they won’t be disappointed! Here is a round-up of some of my personal favourites:

Nottingham Castle

Whether I’m advising friends, family, or guests of the hotel, my first suggestion is usually Nottingham Castle. We’re really lucky to be situated just a minute or two away, which means that I often see the streams of crowds taking photos by the infamous Robin Hood statue! The castle itself – situated on a high hill appropriately named “Castle Rock” – has a fascinating history, and has been a museum and art gallery since the late 1800’s. You can also enjoy the castle’s beautiful grounds whilst admiring fantastic views of the city.

Underground Cave Tours

The huge city of underground caves is Nottingham’s best kept secret, and is actually home to the UK’s largest number of man-made caves. There are plenty of ways to see these original Anglo-Saxon features, whether that’s through Nottingham Castle itself, the guided City of Caves tour (located in Broadmarsh shopping centre) or visits run by The Malt Cross cafe/bar which neighbours our hotel on St James Street. An opportunity not to be missed!

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

If you’re feeling in need of some post-sightseeing refreshments, head to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. More commonly known as the oldest remaining pub in England, Ye Olde Trip has been serving pints to its punters since 1189AD. There’s a real charm to this place (which is said to be haunted!) and is a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. It serves excellent pub food, award-winning beers, and is located right next to Nottingham Castle, so it’s impossible to miss. If history is your thing, they also do cellar tours – although you need to book these in advance as they’re extremely popular.

Annie’s Burger Shack

annies
Widely hailed as home of the best burgers in town, Annie’s Burger Shack is every foodie’s paradise, especially if you’re a fan of the more weird and wonderful flavours. Actor and comedian Johnny Vegas once visited there, and now has a burger named after him (one which is topped with crispy bacon, warm toffee apple butter, grilled black putting, sweet chilli paste and a homemade mini Guinness jelly doughnut ‘Munchkin’ on a stick)! They also serve American pancakes and bacon (much more delicious than it sounds) and a Sunday Dinner burger – not for the faint-hearted! This place is always super busy, so I’d recommend calling in advance to avoid disappointment.

The Nottingham Doughnut Co.

The Nottingham Doughnut Co. remains an undiscovered gem for many, but a gem it certainly is. Founded only last year, it remains Nottingham’s only independent doughnut company and has already attracted a crowd of firm fans. Offering everything from doughnut-ice cream sandwiches to doughnut flavours inspired by the nation’s favourite chocolate bars, there is definitely something for every sweet tooth. It can be hard to miss this place though, which is tucked away on the corner of Old Market Square. The Treat Kitchen (which describes itself as a modern gourmet sweet shop), is also worth a visit, just a couple of minutes’ walk away on Wheeler Gate.
