Nottingham’s profile is even stronger – thanks to books and sport, an audience heard at a Nottingham Means Business (NMB) event.

Speaking at NMB’s latest networking lunch, Hugh White – the city council’s director for sport and culture – discussed how Nottingham was not just England’s Home of Sport, but also the City of Football.

“These are very important for the city,” he said. “Both these titles are powerful tools to attract people to Nottingham and to create the city as a place with a sense of fun and engagement.

“Over the next few years, we as a city have to make sure that we put on the best, blue ribbon events in the city – everything from tennis, to athletics. Hosting major events is vital for the, city’s reputation, economic prosperity and to support community engagement.”

Hugh also gave the audience an insight into the City of Football title for Nottingham.

James Walker, the literature editor of Left Lion magazine and a director of Nottingham City of Literature, talked about the city’s relatively new status as a UNESCO City of Literature. He said there was a five year strategy and a desire to involve the Nottingham community.

“There are 20 UNESCO cities of literature around the world – and Nottingham is one of them. This title will bring so much to the city – but it is important that we do more to get children and young people engaged with reading and literature.

“Nottingham has great names such as Sillitoe, Byron and D H Lawrence. We must always celebrate our rich literary history. We want the business community to get involved too and support what we are doing.”

There were seven new members of NMB announced: Think Blue, B & M Installations, Brooker Flynn Architects, Sandler Training, Sumo Digital, Vistage and Enable.

The lunch was sponsored by T. Bailey Asset Management and held at Trent Bridge.

Nottingham Means Business now has more than 230 members and being a member of the organisation enables firms to take part in an array of Nottinghamshire focused events, including business lunches, sector specific events and social gatherings to encourage collaboration and investment across the region.
