Music – Nottingham Jazz Diary 18-24 October 2019

 

Friday October 18
Soulful singer/pianist Jeremy Sassoon invites us to Root Down at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley with his band; doors open at 7pm, tickets are £12/8.
Saturday October 19
It’s the record breaking Beeston Oxjam all day in multiple venues around the town; I’m playing a solo set at my keys in Bendigo Lounge on the High Street at 2.10pm, music of all genres can be enjoyed until late – get a wrist band from Beeston Oxfam Books and Music Store or online at wegottickets.  You can find Funky Organ at Peggy’s in the evening featuring Thom Whitworth (guitar and trumpet), Paul Deats (organ), Simon Paterson (bass guitar) and Stevie Smith (drums), entry is £10/8 and doors open at 7pm.  There is also afternoon tea there accompanied by Paul Deats’ jazz piano between 12 and 5pm.  Drummer Si Potts and bassist/guitarist Pat Sprakes perform at The Pelican Club in the Lace Market from 7pm.
Sunday October 20
12 To The Bar play at Newark RAFA Club from 12-2pm, featuring vocalists John Brennan and Claire Hyatt, Ben Ward on alto sax and Benny Lee on trumpet; entry is £3 on the door.  Trumpeter Bryan Corbett performs alongside Paul Deats on the grand piano for Peggy’s Sunday Mezinee concert between from 1-3pm, entry is £5. Come 5pm there’s Sunday Cinema at the same venue with a screening of Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, entry is £6 or £16.50 which includes a meal.  Chronology, featuring Pete Lyons on saxophones, Tim Knowles on guitar and Brian Bestall on drums perform at the Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.  There’s Jazz in the Bar at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold at 7.30pm; pianist Bob Hudson is joined by his daughter Joanna on vocals alongside Simon Paterson who is also guesting on bass and vocals and Clive Loveday is on drums, entry is £6
Tuesday October 22
Dexter’s Jazz Club at the Headstocks in Cinderhill welcomes popular bassist Martyn Spencer’s Trio featuring Matt Ratcliffe on keys and Tymoteusz Jozwiak on drums.  Music starts 8.30pm and entry is £6.
Wednesday October 23
Maria Chiara Argirò, an Italian pianist, keyboard player and composer currently living in London is Sounding Off with her band at Peggy’s from 7pm, entry is £5.
Thursday October 24
It’s the popular Nottingham Jazz Jam at Peggy’s hosted by the Andrew Wood Trio – get in early to put your name down if you want to get up (make sure you have your charts in the right key for you). Doors open at 7pm.
Where no entry fee is mentioned assume your purchases from the venue support the music.
