Music: Jeanie’s Weekly Jazz Column 6 – 12 July

You’re treated to a quartet at Stray’s Tapas and Jazz in Newark this Saturday July 7; see swinging pianist Dickie Baker front PRS (Si Potts on drums, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass) from 3-5pm.

Sunday July 8 finds a few picnics in a few parks; the Omega Band play from 1-4pm at the Rockley Memorial Park, Radcliffe on Trent; Dave Leithead is on trumpet, Bob Wilson on trombone, Steve Upton on drums, Ron Spence on bass, Mike Carter on piano and Ian Wheatley is on guitar – sit on the grass or bring folding chairs (picnics are not compulsory).  A similar event takes place in front of Wollaton Hall on the same day; the Cool Jazz quintet kick things off at 1pm and I’m following them singing with super swinging sixties set up Schmorgan (Matt Ratcliffe on organ and Ian Beestin on drums) from 2pm, we also do another set at 5.20pm or thereabouts. Meanwhile saxophonist Ben Martin leads his band atThe Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm and Ed Marchewicz plays sax and flute alongside Barry Lee on keys at the Brewhouse and Kitchen from 2-4pm.

Monday July 9 finds the Omega band back at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm.

The Crimson Tree have The Cappuccino Kids on Wednesday July 11 from 7.30pm; Paul Nose is on vocals and guitar, Steve Phillips on bass, Paolo Iannattone on keyboard and Gary Warner on drums, they play swing and Latin hits from jazz standards to contemporary pop. The legendary seven piece Merseysippi Jazz Band travel from Liverpool to visit the Risley Park Jazz Club; they’re heritage winners for Services to British Jazz so will certainly serve up a feast of traditional jazz music from 8.30-11pm.  Admission is £9.

Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your liberal purchases from the venue cover the entertainment.
