Music – Jeanie Barton’s weekly Jazz column 20 – 26 July

Swing into the weekend on Friday July 20 with the Matt Palmer Trio at Pelican Club in the Lace Market from 10pm until midnight; Matt Palmer is on clarinet/saxophone, Wayne Jefferies is on guitar and John Coulson is on double bass.Jeanie-Barton-by-Tracey-Whitefoot-55_preview

The Groove Merchants (Chris Green on electric guitar, Mat Short on fretless bass and Si Potts on drums) entertain at Stray’s Tapas and Jazz in Newark on Saturday June 21 from 3-5pm. Pete Johnson plays guitar with Ben Martin on saxophone at The Pelican Club from 7pm.

On Sunday July 22 the Edison Herbert Trio grace The Lion in Basford; Edison is on guitar, supported by Matt Ratcliffe on organ and Andrew Wood on drumsfrom 1.30-3.30pm – expect many awestruck guitarists in the audience. Mr Barry Lee is on keys alongside Ed Marchewicz on sax and flute at the Brewhouse and Kitchen on Trent Bridge again from 2-4pm.

It’s the Singers Jam at The Bell Inn on Angel Row on Monday July 23; guesting is the lovely Theresa Caruana and it’s her first proper gig.  Ben Martin plays guitar with Matt Ratcliffe on keys from 8.30-10.30pm – join in the open mic in the second set, just make sure you bring your charts in the right key.

Dexters Jazz Club is on Tuesday June 24 with Joel Purnell on saxophone, Barry Lee on keys, Geoff Person on double bass and Clive Loveday on drums. Entry is £6 on the door and the music starts at 8.30pm.

Blue Brazil are at The Crimson Tree in Sherwood; Christian Zwingel is on vocals/guitar with Ben Martin on sax and flute, they play jazz and Samba from 7.30pmon Wednesday 25 July. Trombone star Richard Leach brings his 7 Stars of Jazz to Risley Park Jazz Club on the same night for another evening of scintillating jazz in the style of the great Alex Welsh; their show runs from 8.30-11pm and admission is £9.

On Thursday July 26 The Unwin Allstars entertain The Unwin Club in Sutton-in-Ashfield from 8.30pm; admission is £7/6 for members.  Henry Claude is on guitar with Dominic Holmes on double bass performing standards at the Pelican Club in the Lace Market from 9pm.

Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your purchases from the venue will pay for entertainment.
