Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column

On Friday February 22 there’s a lunchtime gig after Nottingham Rhythm Club’s AGM starring Washington Whirligig who perform at The Stadium Leisure Snooker Club, Nottingham Road, Basford after 12 midday; £5 entry for non-members.

Paul Deat’s jazz piano accompanies afternoon tea for two (£22) and for one (£12) on Saturday 23 February at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley; fill your ears and mouths from 2-5pm. The fabulous Fiona Stein sings with PRS (Steve Rodda on guitar, Mat Short on bass and Si Potts on drums) at Stray’s Coffee in Newark from 3-5pm. Back at Peggy’s there’s a night of funk and fusion to celebrate the upcoming launch of new music project The 52 Card Trick; the proceeds of which go to the Leicester-based charity Together Against Cancer. Tickets are available from Spirit Wrestlers at Eventbrite in advance or are £6 on the door from 7pm.

Trumpeter Jeffrey Brown fronts the Andrew Wood Trio (Woody on drums, Matt Ratcliffe on keys and Martyn Spencer on double bass) for a triple at Peggy’s on February 24; Sunday brunch from 11am-1pm (brunch for one is £14 and for two is £25) they do another show at 1.30pm (both are £7 entry without food), finally they also fulfill the first set of the Nottingham Jazz Jam from 3pm (the second set is open to sitters in – get there early and bring your charts in the right key for you to take part) entry is £4. Red Sea Jazz are led by James Tolhurst on trumpet The Lion in Basford at the usual time from 1.30-3.30pm.

It’s The Bell ‘end of the month’ singers’ jam on Angel Row on Monday February 25 from 8.30-10.30pm. Fiona Stein joins the Ben Martin band for a good old knees up.

Dexter’s Jazz Club at The Headstock’s in Cinderhill have the ever popular Shell’s Belles big band on Tuesday February 26 featuring yours truly on vocals from 8pm, entry is £6.

Singer/harpist Ellie Ford and her band serenade at Peggy’s on Wednesday February 27 from 7pm, £5 entry.

Jazz Discovery Thursday features trumpeter Hugh Pascall’s band at Peggy’s on February 28 entry from 7pm, entry is £5. Back at the Nottingham Rhythm Club at The Stadium Leisure Snooker Club are Mike Lovell Six-In-A-Bar Classic Jazz Band from 8-10.30pm, doors open at 7pm and entry is £9/8 for members or £6 NUS.

Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your ample purchases from the venue support the live music.
