Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column 21- 27 September

Dickie Baker plays piano with yours truly on the voice pipe at the Fortescue Arms in Billingborough on Friday 21 September from 7-10pm.  Peggy’s Skylight in George Street welcome Running Circle/ Pete Beardsworth who is on sax, keys, vocals and flute with Roshan Gunga on guitar, Tom Towle on drums and George Butt on bass from 9-11pm – tickets are £6.

Saxist Rick Woolgar joins PRS (Steve Rodda on guitar, Mat Short on bass and Si Potts on drums) on Saturday September 22 at Stray’s in Newark from 3-5pm. The Key Notes are performing at 7.30pm in Cotgrave Welfare Social Club, tickets are £5 in advance from Helen Tooth on 0115 9375015. The Swing Zippers Duo (Elliott Lewis and Vic Klimasevscij on guitars) are at The Pelican club in St Mary’s place from 7-8:30pm.  Back at Peggy’s Skylight saxophonist Ben Martin’s Quartet features singer/guitarist Christian Zwingel, who will play the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim from 9-11pm, tickets are £9.

Singer/bassist Nicola Farnon’s quartet are at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm featuring Phil Johnson on drums, Jon Trier on piano and Ben Martin on saxophone on Sunday September 23.  From 2-4pm trumpeter Hugh Pascall brings his new quartet to Peggy’s Skylight featuring John Turville on piano, Nick Jurd on bass and Eaun Palmer on drums; they play a mix of originals and reworked jazz standards – entry is £7/6 concessions.

 

It’s The Bell end of the month singer’s night on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm on Monday September 24 where I am the featured singer with Ben Martin’s band – the second set is open to guests so bring your charts in the right key! Music runs from 8.30-10.30pm.

Dexter’s fortnightly Jazz Club returns on Tuesday September 25 with The Jake McMahon Quartet featuring Barry Lee on piano, Steve Truman on bass and Clive Loveday on drums at the Headstocks pub in Bagnall road, admission is £6 and the music starts at 8.30pm.
Florin Bailey sings originals and standards with Steve Sherriff on keys Wednesday September 26 from 7.30pm at Crimson Tree in Sherwood.

Vocalist, guitarist, composer and rising star Oscar Jerome visits Bodega for three nights in the city centre starting on Thursday September 27 at 7pm with support from Major Ruse, tickets are £8.  Jazz Steps bring the mighty Grammy winning Tim Garland to the Bonington Theatre in Arnold; Tim Garland is on tenor/soprano sax, Jason Rebello on piano, Yuri Goloubev on bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums. Tickets are available from the theatre in advance, online and on the door (£12/5 NUS) music starts at 8pm.  The Unwin Club on Unwin Road in Sutton-in-Ashfield have Martin Bennett’s Green River Jazz Band at 8.30pm.  Entry is £7/6 members.
