Friday January 17
One man blues/rock/rap/improv whirlwind Lewis Floyd Henry invites you to Root Down with him for an eccentric night of multi genre indulgence at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street from 7pm; entry is from £8. You can also tune into Notts TV at 5.30pm for a little pop jazz treat.
Saturday January 18
Alina ‘Hip Harp’ Bzhezhinska has a strong reputation for innovation; she creates a unique sound on her harp with electronics and loop pedals, performing with by Mikele Montolli on bass, Adam Teixeira on drums and Joel Prime on percussion they play original works and covers paying homage to jazz, funk and hip-hop at Peggy’s from 7pm, entry is from £10. Paul Deats plays jazz piano there between 12-4pm too for afternoon tea. I’m singing and playing keys with Stephen Sherriff also alternating between keys and his saxophone at The Hop Pole on Chilwell Rd in Beeston from 8pm; we’re swinging standards, pop tunes plus my originals .
Sunday January 19
12 To The Bar return to the Newark RAFA Club from 12-2pm. Entry is £3 on the door and a buffet is available for a small donation. Their mini big band features singers Claire Hyatt and John Brennan. Peggy’s have a Mezinee concert at 1pm with the Swing Zippers who are part of local gypsy jazz legends Swing Gitan; Elliott Lewis teams up with Vic Klimasevskij to make a guitar duo, entry is £5. Saxophonist Jake McMahon’s Quartet performs from 1.30-3.30pm at The Lion at Basford. There’s a Tap Rhythm Jam hosted by Jess Murray with live Jazz from guitarist Joe Egan’s trio at Peggy’s from 5.45pm; entry is from £8. The punchtastic 17 piece Nottingham Jazz Orchestra host an evening of the music of veteran pianist/arranger Tommy Saville at the Federation Club on Claremont Road presented by his charismatic self from 8pm, entry is £10.
Wednesday January 22
There’s a double bill of trippy jazz at Peggy’s with Brown Fang (Henry Claude on guitar and samples and John Thompson on bass, synths and grooveboxes) plus Angels in the Architecture (bassist Simon Paterson on electric bass who innovatively embellishes tracks with processed vocals and live electronics, synths and samples). Entry is from £4, doors open 7pm.
Thursday January 23
Indulge in contemporary and swing jazz led by guitarist/trumpeter Thom Whitworth when his trio play at Peggy’s, doors open at 7pm and entry is £5.
