Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column

YoPoSh perform at Stray’s Coffee on Saturday December 15; Neil C. Young is on guitar, Louis Potts on drums and Mat Short on bass from 3-5pm. Peggy’s Skylight present the Unity Quartet playing classic 60’s Blue Note Hammond Organ music, covering tunes from Larry Young’s seminal album, Unity. Matt Ratcliffe leads on Hammond organ, Tymek Jozwiak is on drums, BBC nominated young jazz musician of the year Xhosa Cole is on tenor sax and special guest trumpeter is Percy Purseglove, entry is £10/8 from 7pm. I’m singing with Stephen Sherriff on keys at The Factory Kitchen in Ilkeston from 7.30pm.
This Sunday December 16 starts early for pianist Bob Hudson’s trio who play at 1pm in the Bonington Theatre Bar in Arnold; Joanna Hudson sings some Christmas jazz favourites, entry is £6. Saxophonist Ben Martin’s Quartet are at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.  The Swing Zippers (guitarists Elliott Lewis & Viaceslav Klimasevskij) are at the Brewhouse and Kitchen on Trent Bridge from 2-4pm.  The Nottingham Jazz Orchestra present a Christmas vocal extravaganza at the Federation Club on Claremont Road featuring yours truly alongside Joanna Hudson, Mark Daykin and Vicky Moroziuk from 8pm, entry is £8/6 NUS.
Counter who are Joe Egan on guitar and Simon Paterson on bass perform their original numbers at Jamcafé on Monday December 17 from 7pm.  Mandy Tatton and Pete Johnson host a jazz Christmas party at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm – all are invited to jam.
Djanco are The Whitworth Brothers (Thom and Rich on guitar and double bass) who fuse the spirit of gypsy swing with the flair of flamenco; joining them is violin virtuoso Andy Aitchison at Peggy’s Skylight from 7pm on Thursday December 20 entry is £5.  Same night it’s Nottingham Rhythm Club’s Christmas Party with Eagle Jazz Band at Stadium Leisure Snooker Club in Basford from 8-10.30pm entry is £9 (£8 members).

Where no entry fee is mentioned you can assume your liberal purchases at the venue pay for the live musicians.
