It’s a chokka column this wk:
Stephen Sherriff tinkles the ivories at the Madhatters Tea Room in Kimberley accompanying singer Carole Wood on Friday October 19 from 7.30pm.  A fantastic band visit Metronome on Huntingdon Street when Jazz Steps present the Arun Ghosh Quintet (Arun on clarinet, Chris Williams on alto sax, Jessica Lauren on keyboards, Marli Wren on bass and Dave Walsh on drums). Music starts 8pm, tickets are £10, check with the venue for availability.

Gentle Jazz at Stray’s Coffee in Newark finds Dick Gentle fronting the band on soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones (not all at the same time) with Dale Dawson on organ, Si Potts on drums and Mat Short on bass guitar on Saturday October 20 from 3-5pm; their sound is Cannonball Adderley meets Jimmy Smith. Peggy’s Skylight on George Street Hockley present pianist Matt Ratcliffe’s Triol at 8pm, tickets are £9.

12 To The Bar kick things off on Sunday October 21 at Newark RAFA Club from 12-2pm; singers John Brennan and Claire Hyatt front the band; entry is £3 on the door which includes a light buffet. It’s an early Nottingham Jazz Jam Session at Peggy’s Skylight with a 1pm start – the jam afterwards runs until 5pm. Ben Martin on saxophone guests with the band; entry is £3 in advance/£4 on the door. Chronology perform at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm; Brian Bestall is on drums, Tim Knowles on guitar and Joss Mann-Hazzell on double bass play compositions from the post-war jazz era. Ed Marchewics plays sax and flute alongside Barry Lee on keys at the Brewhouse and Kitchen onTrent Bridge from 2-4pm. Pianist Bob Hudson’s trio perform at the Bonington Theatre Bar in Arnold with guest singer Joanna Hudson at 7.30pm, entry is £6. From 8pm at the Federation Club in Sherwood the Nottingham Jazz Orchestra play an autumn themed big band programme; entry is £8.

It’s the singers jam at The Bell Inn on Angel Row this Monday October 22 with a mystery special guest – show up at 8.30pm for the house band’s featured set and bring chord charts in your key if you want to sing with them in the second set. Monday also marks the first day of pianist/singer Wendy Kirkland’s Jazz Steps Library tour at Beeston; her band continue at Worksop (Tuesday 23) Southwell (Wednesday 24) and West Bridgford (Thursday 25) all shows start at 7.30pm and tickets are £10 available from the libraries direct.

The Ben Martin 4 visit Dexter’s Jazz Club at the Headstocks pub in Cinderhill on Tuesday October 23; music starts at 8.30pm and entry is £6.

Jazz Steps present a ground-breaking double bill at The Bonington Theatre on Thursday October 25 with The Josh Schofield Quartet (Josh on alto, Olly Chalk piano, Sam Ingvorsen bass and Billy Weir drums) and Morpher (Jasper Cole on sax/wind synthesisers, Frazer Kerslake electric bass and Chris Macintyre hybrid acoustic/electric drums, expect hip hop flavours and more for just £12/5 NUS, the music starts 8pm. Same time in town, Swing Gitan return to Peggy’s Skylight, entry is £6.

Where no entry fee is mentioned please spend plenty in the venue to support the live music.
