Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column

Akua Naru is an American rapper who blends classic boom bap hip hop sounds, socially conscious rhymes and jazz-soul music; she visits Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley this Friday May 17. Entry is £10 standing £20 dining (includes a £5 deposit redeemable on food) entry from 7pm, after which, DJ Daddio plays until late.

Paul Deats plays his grand piano between 2-5pm for afternoon tea at the same venue on Saturday May 18 and from 7pm Joel Purnell (an internationally recognised and critically acclaimed saxophonist) fronts his quartet, entry is £10. At Stray’s Coffee in Newark PRS (Si Potts on drums, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass) play swing, Latin and funky jazz from 3-5pm. The Key Notes Band and Singers are at Keyworth Village Hall, doors open at 7.30pm and tickets are £5 – it’s bring your own drinks!

12 To The Bar featuring vocalists Claire Hyatt and John Brennan are at the Newark RAFA Club from 12-2pm, on Sunday May 19, entry is £3 on the door with a light buffet lunch provided.  Andrew Wood’s Trio features alto saxophonist Chris Young; hear them Diggin’ on Frank at Peggy’s Sunday Mezinee concert, doors open 12 midday and their show runs from 1-3pm, entry is £8. The same band lead the Nottingham Jazz Jam from 3.30-5.30pm; it’s free entry if you’ve been to the previous sitting otherwise £4 on the door – bring your charts in the right key if you want to get up and play. Swing Gitan play at the Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.  I’m singing with the fantastic Bob Hudson trio at the Bonington Theatre Bar in Arnold at 7.30pm, entry is £6.  British Trumpet virtuoso Nathan Bray takes to the stage with The Nottingham Jazz Orchestra at the Federation Club on Claremont Road at 8pm, entry is £10/8 NUS.

Mandy Tatton’s quartet play their last Monday night gig at The Bell Inn on Angel Row on May 20 from 8.30-10.30pm.

Maisha are Sounding Off on Wednesday May 22 at Peggy’s from 7pm; they bring a fresh slant to the weighty spiritual jazz tradition with their six-piece group led by Jake Long on drums, entry is £14.

Trumpet wizard Hugh Pascall leads Jazz Discovery Thursday at Peggy’s on May 23 with his quartet; entry is £5 and doors open at 7pm. Jazz Steps present pianist Ivo Neame at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold. Best known from his work with Phronesis and the Marius Neset Quintet, he brings his quartet featuring his own compositions performed by George Crowley on tenor sax, Tom Farmer on double bass and James Maddren on drums. Entry is £12/5 NUS and the music starts at 8pm. Nice…
