Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column

Lewis Floyd Henry presents a one man, multi genre, traveling sonic-medicine show at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley from 7pm on Friday April 26. His vocals have flavours of Mick Jagger and his jive is vintage ragtime jazz and skiffle.  Performance from 8pm, doors open 7pm, entry is £8.
Same place, next day; afternoon tea is accompanied by Paul Deats’ grand piano between 2-5pm on Saturday April 27.  Singer pianist Wendy Kirkland is joined by Pat Sprakes on guitar and Mat Short from 3-5pm at Stray’s Coffee in Newark.  Leading UK tenor saxophonist Matt Telfer returns to Peggy’s with his quartet from 7pm, entry is £10.
It’s a full day at Peggy’s on Sunday April 28, who begin with a Mezinee session featuring international trumpet star Ray Butcher with the Andrew Wood Trio; doors open at 12 midday and their show runs from 1-3pm. It is £8 entry but you can also stay for the Nottingham Jazz Jam session featuring the same band plus sitters in from 3.30-5.30pm, followed by an exclusive album preview party hosted by myself and bassist Simon Paterson to celebrate our new LP Moments of Clarity – bubbles will be flowing.  Entry to just the jam is £4. From 7pm until late there is a World Jam Global Poetry Concert which is free entry. Singer Fiona Stein’s quartet performs at the Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.
The Nottingham Jazz Workshop host a concert again at the Lion in Basford on Monday 29 April from 8pm; friends, supporters, jazz lovers and potential new members do check them out. I’m singing with Shell’s Belles who perform for the last Monday night jazz session at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm.
On Wednesday May 1 reeds star David Hepworth brings his talented band Washington Whirligig from Yorkshire to Risley Park Jazz Club from 8.30-10.30pm, admission is £9.
London sax legend Dave O’Higgins joins Matt Ratcliffe on keys, Angus Milne on bass and Andrew Wood on drums to present Jazz Discovery Thursday at Peggy’s on May 2, entry is £5 and doors open at 7pm. Jazz Steps present eccentric trio Oene Van Geel on viola, Mark Tuinstra on guitar, Niti Ranjan Biswas on tabla AKA The Nordanians, who write songs based on traditional ragas, smashing funk and delicate chamber music at The Bonington Theatre in Arnold.  Entry is £10/5 NUS and the music starts at 8pm.
Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your ample purchases from the venue will support the live music.
