Music: Jeanie Barton’s Weekly Jazz Column

HoT SauCe present Chiminyo (a surreal solo project featuring audio triggering and live sound from just one drum kit) on Friday April 12 at Jam Cafe (doors open at 6pm) entry is £8.  London based musicians James Allsopp (sax), Conor Chaplin (bass) and bandleader Dave Storey (drums), pay homage to one of the last surviving heroes of jazz; saxophonist Sonny Rollins at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley from 7pm; entry to their show is £15.

Paul Deats’ jazz piano accompanies afternoon tea at Peggy’s from 2-5pm on Saturday April 13. There’s a Kopinski Coup at Stray’s jazz in Newark when composor and tenor saxist Jan joins PRS (Si Potts on drums, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass) from 3-5pm. Back at Peggy’s from 7pm alto saxophonist Chris Gumbley presents a tribute to Cannonball Adderley; featuring Neil Yates on trumpet, Andrzej Abaranek on the grand piano, Tom Hill on double bass and Andrew Wood on drums, entry is £10. Guitarist Richard Smith’s duo with Matt Palmer on reeds is at the Pelican Club on St Mary’s Gate in the Lace Market from 7pm.
The Beeston Blues Company led by Jimmy Wiggins on guitar and Andy Tytherleigh on bass perform a Mezinee show at Peggy’s on Sunday April 14 from 1-3pm; entry is £7. The McWilliamson Quintet (Stuart McDonald on sax, Chris Williamson on trumpet, Mike Conliffe on keys, John Porter on bass and John Settle on drums) bebop at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm. I’m singing/playing keys at the Malt Cross Sunday Session alongside Stephen Sherriff on keys/sax, Martyn Spencer on double bass and Andrew Wood on drums, there’s also support from singer Liz Cumberland – music starts at 5.30pm.  Jazz in the Bonington Theatre Bar in Arnold kicks off early at 7pm with pianist Bob’s Hudson’s trio; he welcomes singer Joanna Hudson and also guest violinist Jim Walker, entry is £6.
Singer Mandy Tatton’s band are at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm on Monday April 15.
Peggy’s have a free night of Cuban Music presented by Ariel Cubillas from Havana on Wednesday April 17 from 7pm while Richard Smith brings his Jazzuits to Risley Park Jazz Club from 8-10.30pm, Teddy Fullick is on trumpet and Karl Hird on reeds, admission is £9.
Jazz Steps present Entropi at the Bonington Theatre on Thursday April 18; expect dark grooves and interweaving melodic textures from Dee Byrne on alto sax, Andre Canniere on trumpet, Rebecca Nash on the grand piano, Olie Brice on bass and Matt Fisher on drums, entry is £12/5 NUS and their show starts at 8pm. This week’s Jazz Discovery Thursday at Peggy’s is presented by guitarist Thom Whitworth’s Trio; entry is just £5 and doors open at 7pm. Matt Palmer’s duo also return to the Pelican Club at 9pm.
