Music – Jeanie Barton’s Nottingham Jazz Diary 23-29 August 2019

 

Friday August 23
Wind down for the weekend at the Pelican Club, 55 St Mary’s Place in the Lace Market where Ed Marchewicz plays sax and flute alongside Rachael Johnson on piano and Simon Patterson on double bass for the late set 10pm until 12 midnight; have a meal or just a drink at the bar – it’s gorgeous, like being transported to Manhattan.
Saturday August 24
On George Street in Hockley it’s the award winning Peggy’s Skylight’s first birthday and they are celebrating by hosting  Arnie Somogyi’s Jump Monk with a stella line up; Arnie on double bass, Alan Barnes alto saxophone, Jeremy Price on trombone, Mark Edwards on piano and Clark Tracey on drums.  Tickets are £15 and doors open at 7pm – best book in advance though. (They also have their weekly afternoon tea accompanied by Paul Deats’ jazz piano between 12 and 5pm).

Sunday August 25
The Lion in Basford have The Teddy Fullick Quintet featuring John Sanderson on saxes/flute, Richard Hallam on piano, John Spence on double bass, Clive Loveday on drums and Teddy on trumpet and vocals from 1.30-3.30pm.  There’s a 6pm concert at Peggy’s when drummer Andrew Wood’s trio present Honouring The Duke (Ellington naturally). Doors open at 5pm and entry is £8. There’s an all-day music festival at the Hop Pole on Chilwell Rd in Beeston; I’m doing a jazzy set around 6pm at my keys.
Tuesday August 27
Dexter’s Jazz Club have saxophonist David Hawkins’ Quartet at the newly refurbished Headstocks in Cinderhill; entry is £6 and music starts at 8.30pm.
Wednesday August 28
Ariel Cubillas’ Trio bring their Latin jive to Peggy’s from 7pm. The Lowered Tones play eclectic jazz and blues at the Grosvenor pub on Mansfield Road, Sherwood from 8.30pm.
Thursday August 29
Jazz Steps are back! The Brandon Allen/Tim Lapthorn Quartet visit from London to play at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold; Ronnies regulars Brandon on tenor sax and Tim on the grand piano are joined by Arnie Somogyi on bass and Lloyd Haines on drums. Tickets are £12/5 NUS and the music starts at 8pm.  Double bassist Martyn Spencer’s trio are at Peggy’s at 8pm; Matt Ratcliffe is on piano and Tymoteusz Jozwiak on drums.
Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your purchases from the venue pay the musicians.
