The Shakes funk it up at Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley on Friday October 5; David Blazye leads on vocals, guitar and trumpet (not at the same time) with Ben Martin on bass guitar, saxophone and flute (also not at the same time), Paul Deats is on keys and better known Bugg percussionist Jack Atherton is on drums – take your seats by 8.40pm; tickets are £6-8 in advance or on the door. Wendy Kirkland sings at her keys alongside Pat Sprakes on bass and saxist Roger Bird at The Farndon Boat House from 8pm.

They pick up where they left off the following day (Saturday October 6) at Stray’s in Newark from 3-5pm with Mat Short on bass (Pat switches to guitar).  Back at Peggy’s, gypsy jazz meets bebop with DJANCO (featuring violin virtuoso Andy Aitchison) entry is £6-8 in advance or on the door, take your seats by 7.40pm. From 9pm, The Warp Trio have travelled all the way from NYC perform at The Berliner Bar on Chilwell Rd in Beeston as part of their European Tour.

Sunday October 7 finds the Shipstone Street Jazz Orchestra at the Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30 fronted by singer Sarah Simmonds. Ed Marchewicz blows his sax and flute alongside Barry Lee on keys at the Brewhouse and Kitchen on Trent Bridge 2pm-4pm. Pianist Dickie Baker is joined by Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass at the Bees Knees pub in Laneham from 6.30pm.

The Casio Band keep time for the Omegas this week at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm on Monday October 8 fronted by reeds men Ed Marchewicz and Karl Hird.

Dexter’s Jazz Club at the Headstocks in Cinderhill hosts the Ed Marchewicz Quartet on Tuesday October 9 from 8pm, entry is £6.

Thursday October 11 starts early with Blue Brazil at Revolucion de Cuba in Market Street from 6.30-8.30pm (Christian Zwingel sings at his guitar with Ben Martin on sax/flute). At the Bonington Theatre in Arnold, Jazz Steps present the incomparable Beats and Pieces Big Band led by Ben Cottrell alongside Anthony Brown, Oliver Dover, Tom Ward (all saxophones) with Owen Bryce, Graham South, Nick Walters on trumpets, Richard Foote, Simon Lodge, Rich Mcveigh on trombones, Anton Hunter on guitar, Richard Jones on piano/Rhodes, Stewart Wilson on bass and Finlay Panter on drums. Tickets are £10, concessions are available (this will be popular so contact the theatre in advance) their show starts at 8pm.

Where no entry fee is mentioned please spend plenty over the bar to support the live music.
