Music: Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column 3 – 9 August

There’s a Gin and Jazz night on Friday August 3 at The Fortescue Arms in Billingborough where I’m singing with Dickie Baker on keys from 7-10pm.
It’s the Riverside Festival this weekend and jazz features on Saturday August 4 in the form of the Milestones Quintet featuring trumpeter Nathan Bray and vocalist Mellow Baku on the Monument stage from 1.30-2.30pm.
In Nathan’s native Newark, London trained vocalist Rachel Burnett leads her trio featuring John Illingworth on guitar and Mat Short on fretless bass at Stray’s Tapas and Jazz from 3-5pm. In the evening Cranberry Flick play a concert at Beeston Methodist Church on Chilwell High Rd from 7.30pm; tickets are £6 or £5 in advance from the Church, the band or Fugue Music Shop in Long Eaton.
Back at the Riverside on Sunday August 5 the Nottingham Jazz Orchestra grace The Monument stage from 12.30-2pm while the Ben Martin 4 are at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm; Ben is on sax with Matt Ratcliffe on keys, Martyn Spencer on double bass and Andrew Wood on drums.
The same crew minus Woody play the following day Monday April 6 at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm.
On Wednesday August 8 drummer Brian Singleton brings his popular Chicago Teddy Bears Jazz Band from the North West to Risley Park Jazz Club for another evening of top class traditional Jazz; their show runs from 8.30-11pm and admission is £9.
Blue Brazil return to Revolucion de Cuba on Thursday August 9 from 6.30-8.30pm; Christian Zwingel is on vocals and guitar with Ben Martin on sax and flute.
Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your purchases from the venue will pay for the entertainment.
