Music – Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column 26 October – 1 Nov 2018

 

Nottingham born internationally acclaimed saxophonist Tony Kofi joins drummer Andrew Wood’s Trio featuring Matt Ratcliffe on the grand piano and Martyn Spencer on double bass to explore the music of the great tenor players at Peggy’s Skylight in Hockley on Friday October 26 from 8.40pm. Tickets are £10/9 concessions in advance from their website.

Wendy Kirkland sings at her keyboard with Pat Sprakes on guitar, Si Potts on drums and Mat Short on bass guitar at Stray’s in Newark from 3-5pm on Saturday October 27.

I’m hosting the mighty Hockley Hustle Jazz Stage at Peggy’s Skylight on Sunday October 28 the day kicks off at 2.30pm with Shell’s Belles mini big band for whom I sing. For the following set I’ll sit at the grand piano to sing with Simon Paterson on double bass and Ian Beestin on drums we’ll perform my compositions from 3.30pm, after which Simon takes the helm and Matt Ratcliffe takes to the piano for Angels In The Architecture from 4.30pm. Ed Marchewicz steps up front with his sax and flute from 5.30pm and Liz Cumberland sings for Lady Bird Jazz featuring David Hawkins on sax at 6.30pm. Swing Gitan play at 7.30pm followed by saxophonist Gemma Storer’s sextet Boss Magnet at 8.30pm. Finally Peggy’s own Rachel Foster and Paul Deats, who are Me & Mr Jones, close the show from 9.30pm. Much money will be raised for local charities and booze drunk – get your wristbands in advance from the Hockley Hustle website or at the Broadway Cinema foyer on the day.  The Footwarmers continue their weekly residency from 12.30pm at The Bell Inn on Angel Row after which it is closed for refurbishment from the 29th October until 10th November. The Lion in Basford’s lunchtime gig goes ahead as normal; they have a double header with Helen Gayle singing the Billie Holiday songbook, followed by Marcus Joseph both backed by the Andrew Wood Trio from 1.30-3.30pm.

There are spooky goings on at the Risley Park Jazz Club this Wednesday October 31 when undead clarinet virtuoso Jeremy Huggett brings his Dart Valley Stompers from demonic Devon to perform from 8.30-11pm.  Admission is £9.
Where no entry fee is mentioned please spend plenty of money in the venue to support the live musicians.
