This week sees the long awaited opening of Peggy’s Skylight; our very own Ronnie Notts jazz club on George Street in Hockley! Tickets for the opening on Friday August 24 were like hens’ teeth so if you have missed out on that, you can save yourself for the following jam packed day on Saturday August 25 when Stray’s in Newark host singer/pianist Wendy Kirkland and guitarist Pat Sprakes from 3-5pm.

Later, I sing with pianist Bob Hudson from 5pm at The Wagon and Horses in Arnold, Theresa Caruana sings at The Pelican Club in the Lace Market with Henry Claude on guitar and Andy Tytherleigh on double bass from 7-9pm and Swing Gitan perform at Peggy’s Skylight from 9pm (Elliott Lewis and Wayne Jefferies on guitars, James Tolhurst on trumpet and John Coulson on double bass) entry is free.

The jazz continues at The Lion in Basford on from 1.30-3.30pm on Sunday August 26; Andrew Wood’s trio accompanies Chris Bowden on alto sax; the same ensemble lead the Nottingham Jazz Jam at Peggy’s Skylight from 5pm. The Knights of Jazz are at the Yarn Bar in Theatre Square from 5pm-7pm (Matthew Palmer on clarinet/sax, Wayne Jefferies on guitar and John Coulson on double bass with special guests James Tolhurst on trumpet and Jamie Robertson on drums). Matthew and Wayne perform as a duo at The Pelican Club from 8pm-10pm.
On Angel Row it’s The Bell end of the month singers jam on Monday August 27 featuring Marguerite McMullin with Ben Martin’s band from 8.30pm (open mic in the second set).
Incredible multi-award-winning pianist Zoe Rahman and her trio visit Peggy’s Skylight on Wednesday August 29 from 9pm; snap up tickets in advance via the New Art Exchange website for £10.
Thursday August 30 sees the return of Jazz Steps with visiting pianist Elliot Galvin’s Trio at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold from 8pm; tickets are £12 or £5 NUS. Ben Martin’s Quartet perform Electrickery at Peggy’s Skylight; Ben Martin is on saxes and effects with Matt Ratcliffe on piano and synth, Martyn Spencer on bass and Andrew ‘Woody’ Wood on drums, their show starts at 9pm and entry is £6 (£5 concessions)
