Music – Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column 21-27 June 2019

Rikki Thomas-Martínez returns with his band Más Y Más to Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley for an electrifying night of groovy Latin Rumba songs, he is joined by Dalila Thomas-Martínez on Ubass and Keith Angel on percussion this Friday June 21; entry is £6 from 7pm and DJ Daddio plays until late.
At the same venue Paul Deats plays his grand piano between 2-5pm for afternoon tea on Saturday June 22 and from 7pm there’s a Classic Jazz and Meze Session with guitarist Pat McCarthy’s Quartet featuring vocalist Shannon Reilly, entry is £10.
On Sunday June 23 the Lion in Basford host the Shipstone Street Jazz Orchestra led by their new director Andrew Wood featuring vocalist Sarah Simmonds from 1.30-3.30pm. Bob Hudson plays the Steinway for the Bonington Theatre in Arnold’s Jazz in the Bar with his trio; Steve Truman on double bass and Clive Loveday on drums featuring Joanna Hudson on vocals, entry is £6 and music starts at 7.30pm.
The Alfa Big Swing Band perform at the Village Inn, Marehay, Ripley from 8.30pm on Monday June 24.
It’s my official Moments of Clarity album launch at Peggy’s Skylight on Wednesday June 26 from 7pm; I sing while Stephen Sherriff and I share the grand piano (he also plays alto sax) Simon Paterson, who is responsible for the record’s experimental electro-orchestral production, is on double bass and Ian Beestin joins us on drums.  It will be a joyful night – it’s free entry but booking is advised via their website.  The featured band at Risley Park Jazz Club is The Wabash Jazzmen led by virtuoso banjo player Mark Challoner from Crewe. Their show runs from 8-10.30pm and admission is £9.
Trumpeter Hugh Pascall and his quartet host Jazz Discovery on Thursday June 27 back at Peggy’s; entry is £5 and doors open at 7pm. The Unwin Club on Unwin Road in Sutton-in-Ashfield present The New Orleans Hot Shots who play from 8.30pm entry is £7/6 for members.
