Music – Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column 16-22 November 2018

 

Get ready to dance at 7.40pm on Friday November 16 at Peggy’s Skylight in Hockley where young south London based band PYJÆN play dance jazz that fuses afrobeat with hiphop, jazz and rock. Tickets are £5 via Peggy’s website or on the door.
YoPoSh are guitarist Neil C. Young, drummer Lou Potts and Mat Short on bass who play at Stray’s in Newark from 3-5pm on Saturday November 17. Peggy’s Skylight welcome the acclaimed Alex Merritt-Steve Fishwick Quintet who play their original material written by saxophonist Alex, leading UK trumpeter Steve and pianist John Turville. Tickets are £10/8 take and your seats by 7.40pm.

This Sunday November 18 from 12-2pm, 12 To The Bar perform at the RAFA Club in Newark; donations will be taken on the door and all proceeds will go to Beaumond House Community Hospice, which offers respite and end of life care.  I’m singing with the fantastic BoHoP trio (Ian Beestin on drums, Geoff Pearson on double bass and Neil Hunter on keys) at The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm.  Ed Marchewicz plays sax and flute with Barry Lee on keys at the Brewhouse and Kitchen on Trent Bridge from 2pm-4pm, same time, drummer Andrew Wood Trio plays Gershwin, at Peggy’s Skylight with Matt Ratcliffe on piano and Dominic Holmes on double bass, entry is £8.  Saxophonist Karl Hird joins pianist Bob Hudson’s trio along with Joanna Hudson on vocals at the Bonington Theatre bar in Arnold where music starts at 7.30pm, tickets are £6 in advance from the venue or on the door. From 8pm at The Federation Club, the Nottingham Jazz Orchestra performs Big Band Blast Off! Entry is £8/6 students.
Singer Mandy Tatton’s band perform at the Bell Inn on Angel Row on Monday 19 November from 8.30-10.30pm.  Jazz Steps launch their Library tour the same night at Beeston starring singer Mellow Baku who is joined by Barry Lee on keys, Mark Trounson on bass and Andy Ferguson on drums. They continue at Worksop on Tuesday 20, Southwell on Wednesday 21 and West Bridgford on Thursday 22 – entry is £10/8 from the libraries direct and performances start at 7.30pm

The Crimson Tree in Sherwood have The Cappuccino Kids playing swing and Latin hits on Wednesday November 21 from 7.30pm.

Back at Peggy’s on Thursday November 22 saxophonist Ben Martin’s Quartet play Songs (a mixture of jazz standards and modern pop songs) at Peggy’s Skylight from 8-10pm £5.  At the same time, Jazz Steps also present drummer Lorraine Baker who leads her quartet; Nadim Teimoori on tenor sax, John Turville on the grand piano and Paul Michael on bass at The Bonington Theatre from Standard £12/5 NUS.

Where no entry fee is mentioned you can assume your purchases from the venue cover the live music.
