Music Jeanie Bartons Jazz Column 12-18 October 2018

 

The incredible Hypnotic Brass Ensemble originally from Chicago but based in NYC travel to Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley on Friday October 12 – there are still a few tickets available for their 10pm show online for just £12 – don’t delay!

Saturday October 13 is busy with the record breaking Oxjam in Beeston which runs all day at venues across town; weather permitting I’ll be singing with Shell’s Belles big band in the Square at 12.45pm and in the warm of The White Lion at the piano at 6pm. Neil C Young meets Steve Rodda for a guitar duo extravaganza at Stray’s Coffee in Newark from 3-5pm. Frank Meets Ella at 7.30pm with the Tony Farrell Big Band in The Bonington Theatre, Arnold; tickets are £12 (£10 concessions) available in advance from the theatre/online.  There are some standing room tickets left at Peggy’s Skylight for the Deli Quartet who have a mellow to all-out funky sound; Sophie Fishwick is on drums, Deb Mawby on alto and soprano saxes, Paul Deats on Rhodes/piano and Steve Truman on double bass from 7.40pm tickets are £6 online.  Finally it’s Swing and Bass’ second anniversary night at Rough Trade in Hockley between 8pm-3am!

On Sunday October 14 Cool Jazz play at the Pelican Pub in Bilborough from 12–2pm (not to be confused with the Pelican Club!) The RAM organ trio perform at the Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm featuring Matt Ratcliffe on organ, Jack Atherton on drums and Ben Martin on sax/guitar. Our own Martyn Spencer is standing in on bass for Warren Jolly with The Pat McCarthy Quartet featuring vocalist Shannon Reilly, at Peggy’s Skylight, from 2pm.

Monday October 15 is guitarist Wayne Jeffries’ leaving do at The Bell Inn on Angel Row – he and his partner are starting a new life in Australia so his colleagues in Swingologie and Swing Gitan plus special guests (friends) will partake in an extra-long gig special from 8-11pm.  Safe travels Wayne!

On Wednesday October 17 in Sherwood, The Crimson Tree have Kokopelli playing from 7.30pm; Elliott Lewis is on guitar with Ed Marchewicz on sax/flute.

Guitarist Joe Egan is playing standards at Espresso Gallery on Thursday October 18; doors open at 7pm, do pay what you can afford. There’s a Dinner and Dance with the Wabash Jazzmen at Nottingham Rhythm Club in The Stadium Leisure Snooker Club, Nottingham Road, Basford from 8-10.30pm; please ring Jim Robinson on 01509 852253 for more information.

Where no entry fee is mentioned please spend plenty in the venue to support the live music.
