Music – Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column 12-18 July 2019

I hope it’s hot when the Cool Jazz quintet featuring Wendy Smith on drums play at St Mary’s Church in Bulwell as part of Bulwell Arts Festival on Saturday July 13 from 2pm, entry is £3.  At the award winning Peggy’s Skylight jazz club on George Street in Hockley there is Classic Jazz and Mediterranean Meze accompanied by New Jersey guitarist B.D. Lenz who mixes the sophistication of jazz, the grit of blues, and the grooves of funk and soul; tickets are £12/10 and doors open at 7pm. (They also have their weekly afternoon tea accompanied by Paul Deats’ jazz piano between 12 and 5pm). The Key Notes mini big band are back at Kinoulton Village Hall performing much loved songs from Ella, Frank and others; tickets are £5 and their show starts at 7.30pm (bring your own drinks!)
On Sunday July 14 there’s a free Mezinee concert at Peggy’s when Paul Deats is joined by Elliott Lewis on guitar from 12 midday. US alto powerhouse Greg Abate joins Peggy’s house band in the evening; he went to Berklee and played in Ray Charles’ band for many years before touring the world as a solo artist, entry from 6pm is £10/8.   Find trumpeter Joe Binks and guests at The Lion Inn at Basford from 1.30-3.30pm; Stephen Sherriff is on keys, Martyn Spencer is on double bass and Ben Squires is on drums, Gemma Storer also joins on alto and David Hawkins on tenor saxes.
Juggenaught are a Birmingham based trio, led by pianist Piera Onacko who can be found Sounding Off at Peggy’s from 7pm on Wednesday July 17.
There’s contemporary and swing jazz led by guitarist Thom Whitworth at the same venue on Thursday July 18 from 8pm – doors open at 7pm. Nottingham Rhythm Club at The Stadium Leisure Snooker Club, Nottingham Road, Basford have New Orleans Heat from 8-10.30pm, doors open at 7pm and entry is £9, £8 for members or £6 for student card holders – dancing is encouraged!
Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your purchases from the venue support the live music.
