Music: Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column 10-16 August 2018

 

Pianist and singer Wendy Kirkland performs with Pat Sprakes on guitar and Mat Short on fretless bass at Stray’s Tapas and Jazz in Newark on Saturday August 11 from 3-5pm.

Swing Gitan play the late slot at the Pelican club in the Lace Market from 10pm until midnight; Elliott Lewis and Wayne Jefferies are on guitars with James Tolhurst on trumpet and John Coulson on double bass.

Trumpeter and singer Teddy Fullick leads his quintet featuring John Sanderson on sax/flute and Bob Hudson on keys at The Lion in Basford on Sunday August 12 from 1.30-3.30pm while trombonist Bob Wilson’s band play at the Brewhouse and Kitchen on Trent Bridge from 2-4pm.

The Omega Jazz Band (stalwarts of the local scene for forty years) can be heard at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm on Monday August 13. Their ensemble comprises Dave Leithead on trumpet, Bob Wilson on trombone, Steve Upton on drums, Ron Spence on bass, Mike Carter on piano and Ian Wheatley on guitar.

On Wednesday August 15 Bob Wilson’s band return, this time on water for an event on the Sonning River Boat at Newark Castle from 7-10pm; for more details and to book call 01636 918813.  The Crimson Tree in Sherwood have The Cappuccino Kids performing swing and Latin hits from standards to contemporary pop at 7.30pm.

Other regular gigs are on a summer break right now but we look forward to much more jazz in the region come August 24 when the eagerly awaited Peggy’s Skylight jazz club opens on George Street in Hockley – our very own ‘Ronnie Notts’ – many big international names are set to visit!
