Music – Jeanie Barton’s weekly Jazz column 14 – 18 July

Saturday July 14 starts at Stray’s Tapas and Jazz in Newark, where singer/pianist Fiona Stein plays her bluesy repertoire alongside SJ3 (John Illingworth on guitar, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass) from 3-5pm. It’s VicFest at the Victoria Hotel in Beeston where the Swingologie Quartet play from 6.30-8.30pm;Swingologie Quartet
Ben Martin on is sax, Richard Smith on electric lead guitar, Wayne Jefferies on acoustic rhythm guitar and John Coulson on double bass. Then later the same night Wayne and John are joined by Elliott Lewis is on guitar and James Tolhurst on trumpet to become Swing Gitan; they play at The Pelican Club in St. Mary’s Place, from 10pm to midnight.
On Sunday July 15 top trumpeter Hugh Pascal brings his Quartet to The Lion in Basford from 1.30-3.30pm, expect bebop and dry wit. Mandy Tatton sings with her trio, which includes Pete Johnson on guitar, on Monday July 16 at The Bell Inn on Angel Row from 8.30-10.30pm.
The Crimson Tree in Sherwood have Rikki Thomas Martinez strumming and singing his Latin jive on Wednesday June 18 from 7.30pm.
Where no entry fee is mentioned please assume your liberal purchases from the venue will cover the music.
