Friday December 13
Root Down with Young Pilgrims who bring their punchy brass boogie to Peggy’s Skylight on George Street in Hockley; the acoustic line up is Richard Foote and Kieran McLeod on trombones, Mike Adlington, Sean Gibbs and Aaron Diaz on trumpets, Michael Owers on sousaphone, Andy Isherwood on baritone saxophone and Jonathan Silk and Euan Palmer on drums – tickets are £8 or £16 for a dining reservation (£5 of which is redeemable on food). Doors open 7pm. Reeds man Matt Palmer’s Trio is at The Pelican Club in the Lace Market from 10pm.
Saturday December 14
Trumpeter Andrew Morley is playing with PRS AKA Si Potts on drums, Steve Rodda on guitar and Mat Short on bass at Strays new Coffee shop in Oakham from 3-5pm. The Unity Quartet is led on Hammond organ by Matt Ratcliffe, featuring Ninja Tune artist Chris Bowden on tenor sax, the in-demand drums of Tymek Jozwiak and local hero Hugh Pascall on trumpet plus BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2018, Xhosa Cole on tenor saxophone – this epic bunch perform at Peggy’s from 7pm, entry is £10/12 seated dining.  They also present afternoon tea between 12-5pm accompanied by Paul Deats’ jazz piano.
Sunday December 15
Michele Di Toro on piano and Yuri Goloubev on double bass are Duonomics; they perform a lunch time concert at Peggy’s, entry is £8 and the music runs from 1-3pm.  I’m singing with Shell’s Belles mini big band from 1.30-3.30pm at The Lion at Basford.  At the Bonington Theatre in Arnold there’s a Christmas Jazz in the Bar with Joanna Hudson singing Bob Hudson on the grand piano, Steve Truman on bass and Clive Loveday on drums, entry is £6. The Nottingham Jazz Orchestra host a Christmas Big Band Party Night at The Federation Club on Claremont Road at 8pm, entry is £10.
Monday December 16
There’s a Jazz Steps Library tour this week by drummer Sam Jesson’s Magpie trio featuring Tom Farmer on bass and George Crowley on sax; they perform at Beeston on Monday, Southwell on Wednesday and West Bridgford on Thursday. Worksop Library is still out of action after being flooded, and they’re currently looking for an alternative venue.  Tickets are available from the libraries direct and are £10, shows start at 7.30pm.
Tuesday December 17
The Tom Ward Big Band perform at Peggy’s, entry is £6 on the door. There’s a Christmas party jam session at Dexter’s Jazz Club at The Headstocks in Cinderhill at 8pm.
Wednesday December 18
Sounding Off at Peggy’s is singer, songwriter, cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson who proves that classical and alternative R&B music can co-exist. Entry is £13 seated and £10 standing.  Sam Jesson’s Magpie trio are at Southwell Library, see Monday for details.
Thursday December 19
There’s contemporary and swing jazz led by guitarist Thom Whitworth and his trio at Peggy’s from 7pm.  It’s the Nottingham Rhythm Club’s Christmas party with Richard Leach’s 7 Stars of Jazz featuring Kevin Grenfell on trumpet, virtuoso reedman Zoltan Sagi and Richard Leach on trombone, Ian Riley will be on piano, Alex Welsh banjoist and guitarist, bassist Ian Parry and Graham Smith on drums at The Stadium Leisure Snooker Club, Nottingham Road, Basford from 8-10.30pm, doors open at 7pm and entry is £10/8 for members or £6 NUS.  Sam Jesson’s Magpie trio are at West Bridgford Library, see Monday for details.
Where no entry fee is mentioned assume your purchases from the venue support the musicians.
