Jeanie Barton’s Jazz Column – 2nd to 8th August 2019

 

Jeanie is taking a well-earned break so this week’s column is written by Wendy Smith, drummer with the Shipstone St Jazz Orchestra and Cool Jazz.
Don’t miss the Friday session at Stray’s, Newark, this month featuring Neil C Young on guitar and David Healey on saxophone; tickets are just £5, doors open at 7.30 for an 8pm start.
A full week at Peggy’s Skylight begins on Friday with Maniere Des Bohemiens at 7pm (£10) followed by  DJ Daddio’s free 10pm slot.  Saturday afternoon tea from 12pm  with Paul Deats on piano is free entry, just pay for the tea!  At 7pm on Saturday the Harry Bolt Quartet gives you Classic Jazz & Mediterranean Meze for £10 (early bird) and seated (£12).  The free Sunday Mezinee starts at 12pm and features Me & Mr Jones.  At 6pm the same day Gary Reader’s quintet Moja is a snip at £8.  Check out Peggy’s website for full details and bookings.
At the Riverside Festival Nottingham Jazz Orchestra is on the stage on Sunday from 12 to 2pm.  Mark Daykin is on MC duties and will also be singing.   A quick trip across town will bring you to The Lion where the Sunday Jazz Club hosts the Jake MacMahon Quartet at 1.30.  Back to Peggy’s and on Wednesday and Thursday at 7pm entry is free for Music, Meze & More with Muha (Weds) and Triol (Thursday).   The Risley Park Jazz Club is on Wednesday, featuring The Savannah Jazz Band with their New Orleans style traditional jazz. Starting at 8pm, admission is  £9.
 On Thursday Nottingham Rhythm Club at Stadium Leisure presents The Eagle Jazz Band; doors 7pm for an 8pm start.  Entry is £10 (£8 for members).
Unless stated otherwise entry to venues is free, the live music being supported by your purchases.
