Down the Broadway – October 2014

As autumn sinks in and the nights draw closer October is an ideal month to head to the cinema, grab a pint and escape to another world.

gone_girlOpening on the 3rd are 3 diverse films, so the choice is yours. GONE GIRL is David Fincher’s adaptation of last year’s best seller by Gillian Flynn, interestingly enough she has also written the screenplay which may save this from being yet another film from a best seller that disappoints keen readers.  For those who don’t know the story already, it is about the marriage of Amy and Nick, played by the beautiful Rosamund Pike and the increasingly admirable Ben Affleck. However this is not a romcomas it develops into a mystery thriller when Amy disappears and Nick is the prime suspect…

Showing alongside this is a reissue of the 1939 French classic LE JOUR SE LEVE for the lovers of poetic realism this tale of one man’s contemplating’s over a murder is for you. In contrast, if the recent political climate has sparked your interest perhaps WILL AND TESTAMENT is more for you, revealing the human face behind one of the country’s most popular politicians of all time, Tony Benn. On Sunday 5th at 4.45pm live by satellite will be a 5 min introduction followed by a 45min panel afterwards, including, Strictly Come Dancing Star and Jo Brand’s long lost brother, John Sergeant.

Heading deeper into the month EFFIE GRAY opens on 10th and is this month’s BRINGING UP BABY choice on the 14th. Starring the amazing, now grownup, child star Dakota Fanning (Man on Fire) and the incredibly talented Emma Thompson, who also happened to write the screenplay, this period drama follows the relationship between a teen bride and a Victorian art critic. Also hitting the screens that week is local lad Jack O’Connell (Starred Up, This is England) in his latest film ’71 which tells the tale of a young Private deployed to Belfast who accidently gets left behind and has to survive the night alone.

Opening all by itself on the 17this Steve Coogan’s latest offering, this English film is not what you would automatically associate Coogan with, as it is an uplifting story of two young boys and their love of American soul music. On the opening night there will be some Northern Soul favourites playing before and after the 8pm screening in the cafebar.

The music theme continues the following week with BJORK: BIOPHIIA LIVE a recording of her performance at London’s Alexandra Palace; JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE a biopic of the legendary Jimi Hendrix played by Outkast’s Andre Benjamin & TIME IS ILLMATIC a documentary about the hip hop artist Nas.

It’s not all music though, the 24th also sees the release of SERENA which reunites Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) as love interests during the American depression, however this is a tale of bitter jealousy, murder and cold unforgiving ambition. BOOK OF LIFE is also out that week, an animated comedy by producer Guillermo del Toro should be a great one for the kids.

mr_turnerOn the very last day of October Mike Leigh’s latest film MR TURNER arrives. As the title suggest it is about one of the greatest of all English painters, Turner, probing the deeper and darker recesses of the man’s personality Timothy Spall really brings him back to life.

As usual Broadway is also offering FAMILY MOVIE MATINEES every Saturday and SILVER SCREEN every Thursday. This month there is also a MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK FILM SEASON in association with Framework Broadway are showing a series to raise awareness and challenge the stigma associated with mental health, including a showing of DEAD POETS SOCIETY with the late great Robin Williams on Monday 6th Oct at 5:30pm.  Nearer Halloween the MAYHEM FILM FESTIVAL will begin, a full preview of this will be up soon.
