Beauty: What is Microdermabrasion?

IMG_2764

I’m seeing the term “microdermabrasion” cropping up all over Instagram lately, and more and more salons seem to be offering it.  Naomi Campbell swears by them, even the very particular Gwyneth Paltrow enjoys them. But what is it, and what are the benefits?

With “dermabrasion” a dermatologist essentially sands your skin with a special tool, to make way for new healthy skin. This involves going under anaesthesia and it has to be done in a doctor’s office or in a plastic surgeon’s theatre. It’s also very costly and involves a recovery time afterwards.

Microdermabrasion sprays tiny exfoliating crystals onto the skin to gently remove the first layer of skin, it involves no medication, is a fraction of the price and the only downtime is that you don’t wear makeup for 12 hours after the facial as it can clog your skin up, your skin may also be a little pink for 3-4 hours.

When I heard that Embellish Beauty in Nottingham City Centre offered this, I had go along and try it out for myself.

Embellish Beauty is a gorgeous venue; it’s clean and bright and I’m greeted by Lauren who makes me feel at home straight away.

She offers me a drink and I begin to tell her more about my skin.

I don’t have terrible skin, at all. However, I do suffer from large pores and therefore black heads, and when I do breakout I’m left with minor scarring.
Lauren goes on to tell me that this is exactly why microdermabrasion is her favourite kind of facial. Not only is it an ideal ongoing treatment if you suffer from acne, but it’s also a great once-every-other-month treatment if you deal with dull skin, large pores, brown spots, and age spots.

She starts by cleansing my skin to make sure I’m completely makeup free, and then starts with the microdermabrasion part.

It’s completely pain free, just a slightly odd sensation that I can only describe as small and concentrated vibrations. This part lasts about 20 minutes, the crystals are then left for just under 5 minutes and are washed off with a very gentle cleanser.
Microdermabrasion works on all skin types and colours and it works so effectively because it makes subtle changes that you keep on top of by coming back in whenever you feel your skin needs another rejuvenation.

What surprised me so much was that I noticed a difference in my skin almost instantly. Once the pinkness had faded I really felt as though my skin was glowing and wasn’t at all fazed that I was shopping around town with no foundation on. My skin feels soft and clearer, and I’m told I’ll keep seeing results for the next week. I’ll be booking back in with Lauren in about a month for another treatment, and this will something I will definitely be keeping on top of.

Microdermabrasion is £40 at Embellish Beauty, and £45 for a treatment that includes a neck and shoulder massage. Keep an eye out on their Instagram page @embellish_beauty28 as they always have special offers on too.
